It’s the annual event that is set to light up the Campbelltown Showground.
This Saturday a host of rugby teams will descend on the venue for the Fisher’s Ghost International Rugby Sevens competition.
Hosted by the Campbelltown Harlequins Rugby Club, the event will also see teams from Fiji and Melbourne take to the field.
Campbelltown Harlequins vice president of football, Darin Crofts, said the tournament would be a spectacle that locals should not miss.
“Sevens is a shortened version of rugby union,” he said.
“There are seven players on each side and each half go for seven minutes.
“It’s a more open game played on a full-sized field so there is more running rugby and more tries.”
The Fisher’s Ghosts International Rugby Sevens was first held three years ago.
Crofts said since that first event, the tournament had continued to grow.
This year in the men’s competition there will be 16 teams. Five of those sides will hail from Fiji while three teams will represent the local Illawarra competition including Campbelltown and Camden. Players from Sydney’s top competition – the Shute Shield – will also play.
Crofts said the five Fijian sides would be hard to beat.
“They come over to do the (sevens) circuit and spend about three months playing throughout Australia,” he said.
“But having said that, the first two years sides from Sydney have won (the tournament).”
The women’s competition will see 10 teams compete for the trophy. One of those will also be a Harelquins side. Crofts said he expected the local side to “perform fairly well”.
While it may only be the third year the sevens tournament has run, Crofts hopes the event will eventually become “synonymous” with the Festival of Fisher’s Ghost.
He encouraged Campbelltonians to turn out in droves on Saturday to support their local sides and view the action.
“It’s a family fun day with some really good footy,” he said. “It’s a great day for everyone.”
The first game will kick off at 9.30am.
