$10,000 bet on fairytale horse that could cost a bookie $500,000
British hopes of plundering a first Melbourne Cup continue to grow with Marmelo poised to start a commanding favourite as the race's fairytale horse Single Gaze stands to be a horror result for bookmakers after an erratic Call of the Card.
Nervous bookmakers turned away a flood of money intended to back the popular Marmelo during Monday's event, which included a single bet of $10,000 on Single Gaze at $51, which threatens to rip more than $500,000 from CrownBet's coffers. Read more
Inner-west traffic predicted to worsen by up to 300pc
Commuters making the rat run through Sydney's inner-west will face increasing congestion as a result of the WestConnex motorway, as new modelling reveals peak hour traffic will triple in volume on some local streets over the next five years.
The traffic study, commissioned by the Inner West council, predicts hundreds of additional cars will crawl through local streets and arterial roads in order to access the WestConnex motorway or avoid it, once construction is completed. Read more
WestConnex chief says reintroduction of M4 toll is 'exciting'
The chief executive of the company building the $16.8 billion WestConnex motorway has described the reintroduction of tolls on the widened M4 as "exciting" while ridiculing concerns about the health impact of exhaust ventilation stacks.
At a conference on Monday, Dennis Cliche also said 17 million toll "transactions" had taken place with about 150,000 vehicles using the 7.5km widened section of the M4 on weekdays. Read more

Canterbury Bulldogs recruit Kieran Foran 'really happy' as he joins club
Kieran Foran has declared himself in "a really good place", saying the off-field issues that sent his career off the rails are behind him as he looks to start afresh with Canterbury.
The 27-year-old Bulldogs recruit was wheeled out by his new club on Monday as most of Dean Pay's squad assembled for the first day of the pre-season.
He is not yet in top condition after a season with the New Zealand Warriors plagued by injury but, importantly, says he is happy. Read more
