For most people, getting their dog to sit and shake is the best trick they can hope for.
But that’s amateur hour for St Helens Park’s Kou.
The kelpie cross (who possibly has some dingo blood in her) was last week named the Wonderdog of the Year by celebrity vet Dr Katrina Warren.
Kou’s mum Emily Onizawa said she saw Dr Katrina’s competition on Facebook and decided to show off what the talented pooch could do.
“I thought I might try my luck,” she said.
“I don’t know how many entrants there were, but I wasn’t expecting to win.
“It’s pretty amazing.”
Ms Onizawa said she was thrilled Dr Katrina recognised Kou with her annual award.
“Dr Katrina is a name that I’ve known for a while,” she said.
“I grew up with Harry's Practice [where she frequently appeared] on TV and other shows.
“I’ve also seen her at events like the Dog Lovers Show.”
Ms Onizawa said Kou was proficient in a whole host of tricks.
“She can do a variety, from the standard obedience, basic tricks like shake, roll and beg, to advanced tricks such a stacking a ring toss toy, putting toys away in her box, limping and more,” she said.
“Some tricks are impressive and others are very random things like licking her nose, catching her tail, ‘eating my finger’ – just things to keep her mentally stimulated.”
Aside from her exhaustive list of tricks, Kou also has a love of adventure.
“We love our bushwalks and I also used to take her with me to go out on bush trails when I was on horseback,” Mz Onizawa said.
Kou’s skills have also been featured on a TV commercial for Subaru.
