Ever watch a movie and TV show and think, ‘wow, that place sure looks familiar’?
That’s a good chance that familiar place was actually right here in Macarthur.
The region is filled with old homes, streetscapes and bushland that have made their way on to the big screen throughout the years.
Here’s just a taste of what Macarthur has to offer the cinematic world:
Camelot mansion Kirkham
Kirkham Lane’s beautiful Camelot mansion, owned by the Powers family, is most notable for its regular gig as the backdrop of acclaimed and popularly adored Aussie TV show A Place to Call Home.
The mansion serves as the Showcase series’ prime location, the home of the Bligh family, and sees cast members like Noni Hazlehurst, Marta Dusseldorp and Frankie J Holden film there throughout the year.
The home has also appeared in Baz Luhrmann’s Australia.
Argyle Street, Picton
The main street of Picton has hosted one of the most recognisable superheroes of time.
Back in 2012, Hugh Jackman filmed scenes for his second solo Wolverine film – The Wolverine – on Argyle Street, which was dressed with fake snow.
The actor also met with students from St Anthony’s Catholic Parish Primary School.
Simmo’s Beach, Macquarie Fields
A relatively new one, Simmo’s Beach hosted Aussie director Damien Power when he filmed critically acclaimed horror/thriller Killing Ground in the nearby bushland.
The director said, after months of searching for the right location, when he saw “how gorgeous” Simmo’s Beach was he “knew that was the place [they] had to go”.
Onslow Oval, Camden
It was nominated for a slew of Oscars and it was partly filmed right here in Camden – Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken was one of the biggest movies shot in Macarthur.
The actress-turned-director shot a pivotal scene at the showgroudn, highlighting the athletic prowess of real-life protagonist Louis Zamperini.
Private farm, Bringelly
Another uber-famous director selected Macarthur to film his war-related passion project.
Mel Gibson shot part of his highly-acclaimed and Oscar nominated film Hacksaw Ridge – starring Andrew Garfield, Teresa Palmer and Vince Vaughn – at a private farm in Bringelly.
