Western Suburbs Magpies fans may remember some of the sponsors that appeared on the front of the jerseys in the past.
The Goldstar ‘superstar’ Magpies and Masterton Homes were two of the more notable corporate supporters.
But before those two, from 1978 to 1982, it was five letters that were etched on the front of the players’ jerseys.
In 2018 those same letters – Victa – will reappear on players jerseys after the club and lawn mower and equipment company announced they would join forces again.
For Fairfax Media columnist and former Magpies coach, Roy Masters, it was much more than a rekindled partnership with a corporate sponsor.
“Seeing Victa on the Wests jumper is like walking into a room and detecting the scent of the perfume of a former girlfriend you haven’t seen for 30 years,” he reminisced.
“It evokes memories many of us will say were the best years of our football lives.”
Magpies general manager Leo Epifania said he was stoked Victa had come back on board.
“The retro jerseys featuring Victa are still sought out by avid fans across western Sydney,” he said.
“There is an unrivalled synergy between the two brands, with power, strength, rich history and endurance just some of the associations that come to mind.”
Last year Wests Tigers announced the first grade feeder side who will play in the top tiered NSW competition will play under the banner of the Western Suburbs Magpies, not the Wests Tigers.
