Campbelltown PCYC gymnastics program a success story

If you’re into acrobatics, balance beams and ropes, PCYC Campbelltown is the place for you.

The facility has been actively growing its popular gymnastics program for the last couple of years and has seen a tremendous response from the community.

Gymnastics coordinator Sarah Hart said the club had impressed professional gymnasts with their 2017 numbers.

“Just last year we had 450 registered members, which is huge for a first-year gymnastics facility,” she said.

“It’s unheard of. We were blown away that we had that many kids coming through each week.”

Hart said it was the atmosphere at PCYC that kept kids and their parents coming back week after week.

She said there could be a negative stigma associated with strict training regimes in gymnastics, but PCYC Campbelltown made a particular effort to provide a more positive environment.

“We pride ourselves on being a more family-friendly environment,” she said.

“We’re not looking for the next Olympic gold medallist, but if they’re here, that’s great.

“For us, it’s more about the memories the gymnasts make as a part of the team, travelling together and just learning through life.

“If the kids are being active and we’re being role models, we’ve achieved our purpose.

“They’re here to be happy, not to sign their life away.”

PCYC offers a variety of gymnastics programs, from kinder gym (18 months to five years), to the recreational program for school age kids, team gym for the older kids and several competitive fields.

The competitive gymnastics programs are still relatively new, but a recent funding and equipment boost will help develop them even more and provide participants with a higher quality training environment.

Hart said the gymnastics programs were growing every week and 90 per cent of calls to the centre were gymnastics enquiries.

She said the sport was brilliant for kids to get into as it prepared them for any other sports they might want to try and gave them skills – like discipline, teamwork and determination – which were applicable in a broader sense, including the workplace.
