A new Campbelltown-based after hours GP service officially opened its doors today.
The new clinic, located at 23 Chamberlain Street, was established following the closure of the after hours service at Campbelltown Hospital.
The bulk-billed clinic will operate all year round from 6pm to 10pm on weeknights and 2pm to 10pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
Dr Joe Nicholas from Australian Medical Cooperative Limited – the organisation awarded the tender for the clinic – said the Chamberlain Street service would more than compensate for defunct hospital service.
“The main thing is we will provide the right service, at the right place, at the right time for the Campbelltown community,” he said.
“It will have all the GP services that people require.”
He said it was unlikely people who originally went to the emergency department would get in the cars and drive to an after hours service elsewhere if their condition wasn’t deemed an emergency.
Dr Nicholas said, with the aid of advertising and community consultation, the clinic hoped to become the first point of call for patients who might need after hours treatment for non-emergency conditions.
“Part of our job is to educate the community about what an emergency is,” he said.
“We have a complete marketing program in place which is important.”
Dr Nicholas said GPs at the clinic would notify patients’ regular GPs immediately after a visit.
“We intend to work with the hospital and other health care facilities,” he said.
