LIFE OF SI | ‘I had no idea the farmers were facing this much hardship’

Advertiser photographer Simon Bennett captures the daily struggles of Wollondilly farmers in his latest weekly video podcast, Life of Si.

Hot temperatures, paddocks all but dirt and dry, empty and cracked dams are the norm these days for Glenmore diary farmer Gavin Moore and Country Valley Milk owner John Fairley.

Remarkably, in nine months they have only had about 140 millimetres of rain.

Mr Moore is hand feeding his 480 cows.

“Since June we have purchased an extra 10 trucks loads of hay on top of our normal usage,” he said.

“It has cost us about $100,000.”

In Ep 2, Bennett had no idea it was this bad.

“I had no idea they were going through this,” Bennett said.

“I was walking over a dam which used to be full of water, now it is bone dry.

“We need to support our local farmers.”
