Hairless cops walking up and down Queen Street could be a common sight in Campbelltown in the next couple of weeks.

A group of officers from Campbelltown Police Area Command have stuck their hands up to take part in one of Australia’s biggest and most popular fundraisers – the Leukemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.

One of those braving the shave is top cop, Commander Wayne Benson.

By his own admission, Commander Benson said Father Time had already done half the job of the shavers.

Nevertheless, he was more than willing to take part in the event.

“At my age, I’ve lost half of my hair already,” Commander Benson said.

“There are a couple of police here who have done it in the past so we certainly hope to raise as much money as possible.”

Commander Benson said about 10 officers were likely to get involved and shave or dye their hair.

He said it was an experience he was familiar with.

“My wife had breast cancer and I shaved my head then – as did my son,” he said.

Another who will have a date with the clippers or razor is Senior Constable David Blom.

Senior Constable Blom said he had witnessed the devastating effects of cancer first-hand and the World’s Greatest Shave was a small way he could try and make a difference.

“Personally, lymphoma is the reason I became aware of the World’s Greatest Shave,” he said.

“I had two mates in the space of just one year who had it when I was based at Campsie.

“Plus it (the shave) is for a good cause.”

There are 60,000 Australians who are living with blood cancer or related disorders. Blood cancer kills 12 people throughout Australia every day.

Campbelltonians are encouraged to show their support for the officers and the cause and to head down to Macarthur Square next Thursday to witness the event.

The shave will occur at the shopping centre’s centre court at 11am.
