Two newbies have joined the thin blue line protecting Macarthur.
Constable Kimberley Darby and Constable Ethan Hillyer are the newest recruits at the Camden Police Area Command, hitting the streets in Camden and Wollondilly.
The probationary officers are two of the 234 new officers to join the police force in NSW.
Both Constable Darby and Constable Hillyer live in the region they’re serving – making their job that much sweeter.
Constable Darby, 22, said she had always had her heart set on a career with the police force.
“It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was six years old,” she said.
“I love that I get to help the community.”
The Mount Annan resident said the most surprising aspect of her first few weeks on the job was the amount of paperwork involved in policing.
“There might be five minutes of fun and four hours of paperwork,” she said.
“But I’ve been able to do so many different things already and that’s proving really fun.”
Constable Darby hopes to one day find a position in the Dog Squad.
“I love animals, so being able to combine that with police work would be great,” she said.
The former Mount Annan High School student – whose favourite police program is Brooklyn Nine-Nine – said she wanted to be a role model for other young girls.
“I want to prove that being a cop is not just for the guys,” she said.
“I’m a woman and I’m small and I can do it – that means anyone can do it.”
Constable Hillyer, 25, is also out to prove a point.
“I was never very academic when I was at school,” the former Mount Annan Christian College student said.
“I dropped out of year 11 because school was not for me.
“But the police was a great option for me, it’s something that anyone can work towards.”
The Catherine Field resident was inspired to become a cop when he was a child.
“I was fascinated ever since I saw my uncle, who is a police officer, roll up in the driveway in the police car one day,” he said.
“He let me play with the lights and sirens and ever since it’s been something I wanted to do.
“I want to make a difference in the community.”
Constable Hillyer prefers real-life police TV shows like RBT to dramas and is keen to work his way through the force.
His ultimate goal is join the Mounted Police.
“I grew up around horses, so that’s something that’s always interested me.”
