Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan set to host spectacular wattle display: Photos

Sick of the winter months and craving some warm weather?

Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan is proud to announce that spectacular wattle is coming into bloom.

The Australian native flower display reminds Macarthur residents that spring is not far away.

Wattle is set to be in full bloom ahead of National Wattle Day on September 1.

Botanic garden curator manager John Siemon invited everyone to come along and check out the beautiful display.

Mr Siemon said he expected more visitors to attend the gardens as the weather warmed up.

“It’s that time of the year where people are looking to do more outdoor activities,” he said.

“For passionate plant people, it’s a chance to seek out wattle.”

Mr Siemon said he hoped the wattle would make a spectacular bloom this year.

“It’s been an extremely dry period of time, which could decrease the wattle’s ability to bloom,” he said.

“On the other hand, if a plant is placed under stress it might prioritise its resources to flower in a last-ditch survival track.

“This could lead to a beautiful display.”

Mr Siemon said wattle played an important role in Australia’s eco system.

“Australia has 950 native wattle species out of the 1350 species in the world,” he said.

The Mount Annan facility is the largest botanic gardens in Australia.

It specialises in growing and showcasing Australia’s native flora.

Mr Siemon said Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan had increased its focus on diversifying its flora in recent years.

However, he said he loved seeing wattle in full bloom at the Macarthur gardens.

“It reminds me that spring is just around the corner,” he said.

“We’re on the cusp of warmer weather.”

Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan is open daily between 8am and 5pm.

The gardens are located on Narellan Road, Mount Annan.
