Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott chats with residents in Picton

More than 200 people took the chance to get up and close with one of the nation’s best-known politicians in Picton on Sunday.

Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott was guest speaker at the latest “On Tap” forum at George IV Inn.

Wollondilly Liberal candidate Nathaniel Smith organises the monthly On Tap sessions and said it was great to host Mr Abbott.

Mr Abbott made a speech before participating in a question and answer session.

Mr Smith said it was “great to give the community an opportunity to have their say” at Sunday’s forum.

“It was great to have so many passionate people engaging in the political debate,” he said.

“I believe that grassroots engagement is so important.”

Mr Abbott said he enjoyed the chance to discuss critical issues with Wollondilly residents.

“It was great to meet with the community in Picton and talk about issues such as getting the balance of growth right for this area,” he  said.

The next On Tap forum will be held in Picton in late January.
