“It was just our year – we were determined we were taking it out this year.”
That’s how Southern Districts men’s coach Eliza O’Leary described the feeling after her team broke an eight-year drought to win the 2018 NSW Open Men's State Championship at Blacktown in late November.
Southern Districts, which features several Macarthur players, cruised to the top of their pool with wins over Cumberland Nepean, Penrith, Georges River, Campbelltown, Macarthur and Central Coast.
Southern Districts replicated that dominance with a crushing 10-0 win over Georges River in the final.
The winners were led by a dominant display in the final by pitcher Shaun Lanaghan.
Southern Districts jumped out of the box to lead 3-0 after the first innings and never looked back.
The game was over in the fourth innings courtesy of a Steven Evic home run.
O’Leary said she was pleased with her team’s performances at the competition.
“It’s a hard tournament to play in because most of the teams have been together for a long time,” she said.
“A lot of the boys have been together since they were tee-ballers so I was proud of them to see them win their first state title.”
