Peter Barron volunteers his time to drive seriously ill people to and from hospital.
But he doesn’t think that’s anything special.
The Campbelltown man has been volunteering with Angel Flight since 2016 and just likes to “help out when I can”.
He and wife Anne regularly journey to Bankstown airport to collect rural patients and take them to their medical appointments and accommodation.
Mr Barron is what the folks at Angel Flight refer to as an ‘Earth Angel’, who uses wheels rather than wings to help out ill patients who live hundreds of kilometres away from medical care.
“Most of the time we’re taking children and their parents to Westmead or Randwick hospitals,” he said.
“We facilitate their travel so they can get to their appointments.”
Since starting with the charity, Mr Barron has completed more than 40 trips.
He said it was a privilege to provide some assistance in what was often very trying circumstances.
“Getting to and from hospital is one less thing these people have to worry about,” he said.
“It is very rewarding.
“I feel very fortunate to be able to help people out when they’re in need.”
Mr Barron said volunteering for Angel Flight allowed him to meet lots of interesting people.

“I remember one man we picked up, I think he was from Tamworth,” he said.
“This was a single father who was looking after his sick son.
“He hadn’t gone on a date in years but he starting talking with a single mother in Queensland who was in a similar situation.
“They were about to meet up for the first time.
“You hear so many inspiring stories.”
Mr Barron said he first heard about Angel Flight at a Probus Club meeting several years ago.
Now that he volunteers, Mr Barron finds himself speaking at Probus meetings.
The charity is funded entirely through donations from individuals, business, clubs and service clubs.
Money donated is used for fuel, discounted flights for patients, the Angel Flight support centre and two full-time staff members.
Angel Flight coordinates non-emergency flights to help country people reach their medical appointments in cities free of charge.
