Locals brave searing sun and scorching temperatures at Picton Australia Day celebrations: pictures

The mercury might have been nudging 35, but not even the fierce sun could stop the Aussie spirit on show at Picton Botanical Gardens this morning.

Hordes of people gathered to celebrate Australia Day at Wollondilly Council's annual fun day.

There were petting zoos, snake wranglers, marching bands, face-painters, emergency services and more in attendance to keep the whole family entertained.

Buxton's Helen Fenning was named Wollondilly Citizen of the Year at the official ceremony and proudly encouraged all in attendance to give volunteering a go.

Guest speakers Kathy and Ralph Kelly of the Thomas Kelly Foundation had the crowd hanging on every work as they spoke of the hard work they and their team had done since the deaths of their sons Thomas and Stuart.

Dharawal elder  Glenda Chalker delivered the Welcome to Country.

Council staff worked hard to ensure everyone was well hydrated and kept cool.
