Jody and Matthew White and their team at Family Dental Care have been keeping the Macarthur community smiling for 25 years.
“Not long after Matthew and I opened the practice here, we saw a lot of children who had quite a lot of challenging dental conditions,” practice manager Jody White said. “There was lots of decay and toothaches and not a lot of understanding about diet – things like soft drinks – and these were affecting, not just little kids, but teenagers as well. That’s when we started to think ‘what can we do for kids in the community?’”

The couple rang schools and preschools in the area, volunteering to visit, bringing with them the knowledge children needed to be able to care for their own teeth.
“Dental Health Week is always in August, so we started to visit schools, have a talk to the kids, show them how to brush and answer questions,” Ms White said.
That was many years ago and the initiative has expanded to include daycare centres and, most recently, tailored to suit seniors in retirement homes.

“Over the years, we have hopefully made a bit of an impact,” she said. “We give each child a little gift bag, and it contains some great information on how to access dental health services in the public sector because not a lot of people know there is free dental treatment available in the form of vouchers, which you can use at a private practice.”
The dental gift packs given to children include a toothbrush and toothpaste, information on how to correctly brush teeth, and how to identify decay in children.
This is just one of a range of ways Family Dental Care are out in the community – keeping people smiling.
