Police urge motorists to slow down and stay alert this Anzac Day holiday period.

Double demerits come into effect from 12.01am on Wednesday, April 24 and concludes at 11.59pm on Sunday, April 28.

There will be an increased police presence on the state's roads over the coming days as part of NSW Police's Operation Tortoise.

Police will target speeding, mobile phone, seat belt and motorcycle helmet offences.

NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command's Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said police expected more cars on the road over the Anzac Day holiday period.

"We will be out in force. We will be doing more breath tests, we will be doing more drug tests," he said.

"If you are speeding in NSW, particularly in regional areas, you will be pulled up and receive an infringement notice."
