Construction work has officially started on the $362 million redevelopment of Campbelltown Hospital which will see the building double in size.
Camden MP Peter Sidgreaves said this was the start of an exciting new era in health care.
"This outstanding facility will be a significant boost to health services in south-western Sydney and will establish Campbelltown Hospital as an international training ground for the next generation of doctors and researchers," he said.
"With more clinical services, medical specialties and increased health care services, there will be more local jobs and opportunities for career development."
The redevelopment is expected to be complete in 2022 and feature a larger emergency department, modern operating theatres and more. There will also be upgrades to women's health services, the paediatric unit, mental health units and patient facilities.
A smoking ceremony marked the start of construction on Friday.
