A Picton man has been killed in a light plane crash near Braidwood this morning.

The crash occurred at a property near the Nerriga Bridge, north-east of Braidwood, about 11.30am on Tuesday, August 6.

It is understood the pilot was the only person on-board. The pilot's name has not yet been released.

The two-seat Liberty XL2 light aircraft took off from Camden Airport on Monday and landed at Moruya.

The pilot stayed overnight and was heading back to Camden this morning. A Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) spokesman confirmed the pilot attempted to land the plane when the crash occurred.

It is understood the plane was registered to J&R Corbett Pty Ltd.

An Australian Transport Safety Bureau spokesman said the ATSB and NSW Police were investigating the incident.

The spokesman said a team of ATSB safety investigators were expected to head to the crash site this afternoon.

"The initial ATSB safety investigation will include examination of the accident site and the assessment of aircraft and pilot records, weather information and any available recorded data," he said.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

More to come.
