About 6900 people were killed or maimed last year by landmines, improvised bombs and unexploded munitions even though its has been two decades since they were outlawed.
More than 3000 people died and around 3800 were injured in 2018, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines said in its annual global report published in Geneva on Thursday.
Many of the casualties occurred in conflict zones such as Afghanistan, Mali, Myanmar, Nigeria, Syria and Ukraine.
Despite the high casualty figure, the 1999 Ottawa Treaty to ban mines has been highly successful because it has stopped production and use of landmines in most countries, the ICBL said.
"It has saved tens or even hundreds of thousands of lives, limbs and livelihoods," said Steve Goose of Human Rights Watch, one of several advocacy groups involved in drawing up the mine report.
Over the past year, landmines were newly-deployed by government forces and armed groups in Myanmar, as well as by armed groups in Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nigeria.
Improvised land mines were made my non-state armed groups in several countries including "mass production" by Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen, according to the ICBL.
