If there's one thing that's kept Gay and Denis Bird together for 60 years, it's their shared sense of humour.

The Eagle Vale couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Monday, December 2.

The pair love a hearty laugh, and the day of their anniversary was no exception.

Daughter Alicia Bird said her parents, who have lived in the Macarthur area for more than 20 years, relied on good humour to see them through six decades.

"Mum says they remain married because Dad's a hoarder and won't get rid of anything," Alicia joked.

"But community, sticking it out through the tough times and good family ties with lots of laughs along the way helps."

The Birds, now 77 and 79 years old, were married as teenagers after meeting through friends.

"When Mum was 13 she lived in Manly an she would often visit her neighbour Hazel who had lots of little kids, and Mum would help her own," Alicia said. "Hazel was married to George, who is my father's older brother.

"Dad often went to see his brother and met Mum there, when he was 15.

"They started out as friends and started dating at 14 and 15 years old."

The Birds have been inseparable ever since, and have three children (Denis, Neil and Alicia), eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Alicia said her parents have always kept busy throughout their lives.

"Mum always worked hard, and she'd often bring extra work home," she said.

"She worked in factory shops and office work throughout her life.

"Dad was a sheet metal worker and later had his own security door business, then ended up working in the Channel 9 archive library for many years before retiring.

"Both were involved heavily in Bankstown soccer - Dad started the premier league competition back in the 80s.

"Now they like to garden and Mum loves going to bingo at the tennis club and giving the old girls a good laugh."

The Birds received congratulatory letters from the Queen, Prime Minister and Governor-General.
