Women's Super Rugby team wins big in Camden

It might have been pouring rain in Camden on the weekend but the wet weather didn't stop some of rugby's biggest hitters from battling it out.

The NSW Waratahs Super Rugby Women's team took on the ACT Brumbies in a clash at Camden Rugby Park on February 8.

The home side defeated the visiting Brumbies 27 - nil in front of an enthusiastic local crowd.

Camden Rugby's Patrick Hutchison said it was an honour for the local club to host the trial match.

He said crowds were "massive" on the day.

"The whole undercover verandah was packed and we had cars in two rows all around the field," Mr Hutchison said.

"There was lots of cheering happening - everyone was getting really involved.

"It was just a trail game but it was a grand final atmosphere."

The NSW Waratahs said the match was a "very solid first hit out from the women's team".

Eva Karpani and Shanice Parker scored two tries each while Lillyann Mason-Spice and Chloe Leaupepe crossed the line once each.

"This is the elite level of women's rugby in Australia," he said.

"It was a good chance for people to watch some top class rugby for free.

"It was also a great way for girls and women who are interested in the sport to get inspired and see what can be achieved."

The free match kicked off at 3pm.

Mr Hutchison said it was good to see so many women come down and cheer on the state side.

"We saw lots of mum's who don't usually come down to the park come down and cheer on the women's team," he said.

"It was great to see so many people there."

Mr Hutchison said there were a range of different pathways to help women or girls learn how to play the sport.

"It's a team-based environment so players can enhance their social skills and get more confidence - we see that a lot with our girls, just how much their confidence grows," he said.

"It's a fun sport to play as well."

Mr Hutchison said the event was a great thing for Camden.

"The Waratahs and the Brumbies said they enjoyed it as well so hopefully we can get it next year as well," he said.

"Our next big event is the Macarthur 10's tournament on Febraury 22."
