Your chance to name five reserves in the Camden area

The Geographical Names Board is seeking community feedback on proposals by Camden Council to name five reserves.

Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said the proposed names are for reserves located in the suburbs of Camden, Camden South and Mount Annan.

Bill McCall Park is proposed for a reserve located at 1 Selkirk Place Camden South, in commemoration of the late William (Bill) McCall.

Mr McCall was a land developer involved in the development of the South Camden area and held a position as Member of the House of Representatives from 1934 to 1943.

Reeves Reserve is proposed for a reserve located at 11 Reeve Place Camden South, in commemoration of Henry Pollock Reeves who was Camden school master from 1850-1880s, Mayor of Camden in 1894 and the designer of the Camden School of Arts Building.

Stoney Range Reserve is proposed for a reserve located at 80A McCall Avenue Camden South, named after a topographical feature located within what is now called Camden Park, an area of 2250 acres granted to John Macarthur.

Engesta Reserve is proposed for a reserve located at 52 Engesta Avenue Camden, named after the street in which it is located. Engesta is the name related to the former company involved in development of the Camden area.

Stockmans Drift is proposed for a reserve located at 35 Burnett Avenue Mount Annan, named to honour the many stockmen that provided support to Governor John Hunter during his time as governor of New South Wales in the late 1700's.

Mrs Underwood said the board is encouraging community comment before it considers the proposal.

"It is important that place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community," she said.

"We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name."

Details of the proposal can also be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website.

Alternatively, email submissions can be sent to ss-gnb@customerservice.nsw.gov.au or written submissions may be lodged with the Secretary Geographical Names Board 346 Panorama Avenue Bathurst NSW 2795.

The closing date for submissions is July 3, 2020.
