Wollondilly Knights AFL teams have stellar season despite rough start

What started as an uncertain year for local sporting groups ended in great success for Wollondilly's AFL Clubs.

The Wollondilly Knights women's team finished at the top of the ladder after being dropped a division due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The team also made the grand final after the shortened season.

The success didn't stop with the grand final appearance, Wollondilly women's AFL team had players poll well in individual competition awards.

Knights player Zoe Groom not only took out the Wollondilly Club's Best and Fairest award but the talented athlete also captured the overall Sydney AFL's Best and Fairest award.

Fellow players Lisa Kuschert and Ashlei Paget shared third place, with Kuschert also taking the runner up award in Wollondilly.

The Wollondilly Men's team finished the season with a respectable fourth place on the ladder.

Whilst they didn't make it into the grand final this year, individual players were successful with David Wolfe winning Sydney AFL's Best and Fairest with James Weston taking runner up.

Shaun Paget not only took out Sydney AFL's Leading Goalkicker award with 18 goals, but he also won the Wollondilly Club's Best and Fairest award for the third time.

Riley Mitchell was named as this year's runner up.

The Wollondilly Redbacks Juniors also shared in the successful year for Wollondilly AFL by having five junior teams play in grand finals.

The Redbacks were also given the honour of hosting some of the grand final games at Hannaford Oval in Wilton.

Wollondilly's U17s, in combination with another club, won their grand final with Hayden Willebrand winning best on the ground.

Natasha Hamilton was also named best on the ground during the U14s girls grand final.

Wollondilly Redbacks players also had successes at an association level with Matthew Ronan and Cassie Williams winning Sydney Junior AFL Best and Fairest awards for their age groups.

Joshua Croft won Sydney Junior AFL's Most Improved Umpire and Sydney Junior AFL Leading Goalkickers went to Ashton McCabe and Joel Shipard for their respected age groups.

Wollondilly AFL is currently running a summer AFL competition at Hannaford Oval in Wilton on Wednesday evenings.
