Romance, as a genre, leaves little space for the unexpected.
Whether the leads end up together or not (they usually do) and whether they make it to the end without one of them dying (most of the time) are typically the only variables.
Their predictability doesn't make romantic movies any less enjoyable - in fact, their consistency is what draws many people in.
The latest romantic offering from Netflix doesn't stray from the genre, and delivers a solid, enjoyable viewing experience.
The Last Letter From Your Lover, adapted from a Jojo Moyes (responsible for Me Before You) novel of the same name, chronicles two love stories, more than 50 years apart.
We open with Jenny (Big Little Lies' Shailene Woodley, also producing), an American married to a Brit in the 1960s, who is clearly returning home from some sort of traumatic accident.
She seems to have no memory of her situation, her likes and dislikes, even how she refers to her husband (Joe Alwyn, The Favourite).
But when the story shifts to six months earlier, we learn her keeping-up-appearances husband was mostly absent, and rarely collaborative in their life together.
So when Jenny meets the charming, clever financial journalist (Callum Turner, Emma) tasked with writing her husband's profile, it's not hard to see why she wants to spend more time with him.
Meanwhile, in modern times, hot mess journo Ellie (Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything) finds one of the love letters from Anthony (the financial journalist) to Jenny in her newspaper's archives, and is determined to learn more.
With help from her rule-following colleague Rory (Nabhaan Rizwan, 1917), Ellie pieces together the puzzle of this long ago romance.
Of course, their shared pursuit brings Ellie and Rory closer together and a romance of their own blossoms.
The Last Letter from Your Lover is a great romantic escape with shades of The Notebook and Letters to Juliet, with some top 60s music, likeable performances from charming leads and beautiful period costume. It also showcases Turner's talent, and will hopefully see him score some more lead roles.
