After a gunman's shots rang out across a Darwin apartment complex, Julie Kay found her elderly neighbour lying in a pool of his own blood.
Three loud bangs alerted the Garden Hills resident something was wrong as she stood in her kitchen on June 4, 2019.
That's the day Benjamin Glenn Hoffmann, 47, is accused of murdering four people with a shotgun during an afternoon rampage across the city.
He denies the charges against him.
"I could see the door was shattered near the handle," Ms Kay told his Northern Territory Supreme Court trial on Friday.
"There were gunshot shells on the ground, empty shells."
Ms Kay said she and another neighbour, Murray Schneider, pushed open the door to Nigel Hellings' apartment.
"I could see down the hallway and I saw two feet," she said.
"There was a man on the floor. He was lying on his back. There was a large pool of blood around his pelvis and torso area."
Ms Kay said she felt a faint pulse on the 75-year-old's leg so searched for a bullet entry hole so she could try to stop the bleeding.
"I couldn't find the entry hole, he was still warm his eyes were open but he didn't respond at all," she said.
"I then went up to his neck to find a pulse but I couldn't find a pulse."
Mr Schneider told the court he spotted a man in a hi-vis shirt carrying a shotgun after bangs that sounded like firecrackers near Mr Hellings' apartment.
"One of the neighbours told me it was an f***ing mess in there. I found Nigel on the floor in a pool of blood," he said.
"We realised pretty quickly he was gone."
Catherine Burns also heard the gunshots from her home at the Garden Hills complex.
She peered over her fence to see a man "vigorously" banging on a neighbour's door.
"He was yelling open the door," he said.
"There was something in his left hand. I didn't see what it was but at that point, I was pretty sure it was a gun of some sort so I legged it out of there."
The Crown says Hoffmann arrived at the apartment complex at 5.54pm and that he shot Mr Hellings in the groin while he was searching for a man named Alex Deligiannis.
Minutes before that, Hoffmann had been at the Palms Motel, where he murdered his first victim, Hassan Baydoun, 33, prosecutor Lloyd Babb SC says.
Leon McGuane called triple zero from the motel at 5.42pm as Hoffmann allegedly prowled about while armed with a shotgun.
"We've got a bloke here with a shotgun shooting up the place," he could be heard saying in a recording of the call played for the jury.
"He's looking for someone, hunting around looking for someone to shoot.
"He's a tall skinny chap," he said, as two more shots were heard in the background.
Mr McGuane told the operator about 20 shots had been fired.
"He's looking for someone to kill," he said.
In court, Hoffmann remained stony-faced and silent as multiple triple- zero calls were played for the jury.
At one point he buried his face in his hands and stuck his thumbs in his ears.
But earlier in the day, Hoffmann vented his frustration as Mr Babb showed the court a video of a rural property where he allegedly tried to run down a woman about an hour before Mr Baydoun was shot.
"I don't see how this is relevant? We're not denying any of this," he said, clearly agitated.
"You sit there and you protect Alex and his mates. That's more relevant.
"They need to know the truth. The jury need to hear the truth."
Michael Sisois, 57, and Rob Courtney, 52, were the other men who died.
The trial continues on Monday.
