Fresh from her Australian debut, Campbelltown-Camden bowler Hannah Darlington has just been named captain of the Sydney Thunder.

The 19-year-old picks up the reins from Rachael Haynes, who is taking time with her newly arrived baby boy Hugo and recovering from a hamstring injury.

Darlington will lead the green machine in seventh season of the Women's Big Bash League after receiving the honour at Thursday's shirt presentation ceremony in Hobart.

"It's a huge honour after being part of the club for nearly five years now," Darlington said after the presentation.

"Having this opportunity to step in for Rach, who's been a massive influence on my leadership style and I think on a lot of this group, is pretty special.

"I'm ready to lead a team I'm very passionate about being a part of."

Darlington, who is a proud Kamilaroi woman, was also thrilled a smoking ceremony was part of the presentation.

She said it demonstrated the club's commitment to the diverse Thunder Nation.

The bowling all-rounder said Haynes left big shoes to fill and the team would miss her in her absence.

"Of course it's a big loss to lose one of the best players in the world and our leader," Darlington said.

"But the arrival of Hugo is a very special moment for Leah [Poulton] and Rach.

"I'm looking forward to having Hugo around the squad in a few years."

Darlington said she had picked up a lot from Haynes during her two-game stint as captain of the NSW Breakers which prepared her for her new challenge.
