Queenslanders urged to be rail safe

This includes cars blocking the 'keep clear' section on a level crossing, people racing across tracks as trains approach and trucks opting to lose a bit off the top as they crash into low bridges.

In one nightmare scenario, a man runs down train station stairs only to fall face first down two flights before being knocked unconscious as he lands with his pants around his ankles and underwear exposed.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey is pushing the mantra "stand back, look up, stay rail safe".

"Any incident on the railway is one too many," he said.

"A moment of distraction or impatience can change your life forever but it can also have a lifelong impact on our rail staff.

"Even if it's just a near miss, the impact that can have on a train driver, train guard or nearby station staff can be unimaginable."

Queensland Rail recorded 150 near misses, 338 customer injuries and 59 bridge strikes in 2021-22.

The number of near misses was the highest in the past five financial years, while 2021-22 is the second highest tally over that same period.

In the 20 minutes of footage released on Saturday, trucks can be seen getting stuck under boom gates and cars stop on the tracks as a train approaches.

Bridges and arches take a battering as trucks frequently underestimate their size, busting open pantech frames or open loads and often spraying nearby cars with debris.

The CCTV footage reveals people running and tumbling down stairs, often sporting limps afterwards or being knocked cold. Others inexplicably try to cross the tracks as a train bears down.

Queenslanders are being warned trains travel up to 160km/h and are unable to swerve or stop quickly.

TrackSAFE Foundation's executive direct Heather Neil recommended people remove distractions like headphones or mobile phones when on platforms.

"A moment of distraction can change your life," she said.
