Fairfax journalist Eryk Bagshaw describes Newcastle as being in the middle of a battle over the future of its transport system.

“For a city’s that’s dealt with its fair share of challenges, the removal of Newcastle’s heavy rail line looks to be one of the most divisive issues in the 2015 election,” he said.

“Incumbent Labor MP, Tim Crakanthorp, wants to improve access to the foreshore but keep the infrastructure of the rail line.

“For the Liberal Party, this election marks their re-entry into Newcastle politics after a six month hiatus.  Spurred by the resignation of former Liberal Party MP Tim Owen, after his corrupt dealings with property developers were uncovered at ICAC.

“Former Independent MP, Karen Howard, is the Liberal Party’s candidate at the upcoming election. She has reaffirmed her Party’s commitment to light rail.

“Voters in Newcastle are equally divided.”
