Surrendered firearms
Tasmania Police collected close to 2,000 unregistered and unwanted firearms during a three-month national firearms amnesty.
Between July and September Tasmania Police received 745 shotguns, 1071 rifles and 108 handguns.
Among the surrendered items were a .222 calibre rifle, a 150-year-old antique Belgian Lefaucheux 9mm pinfire revolver and a Norinco NZ75 9mm pistol.
Tasmania Police Firearms Services Inspector Kathy Bennett said the quantity had been “colossal”.
“I would like to thank every person who handed in a firearm during the amnesty, they have contributed to making our community a safer place,” she said.
Tasmania has had a permanent firearm amnesty in place since 1997.
