Ryan Reynolds is one of the most likeable guys in Hollywood and now he's played one of the most likeable characters of his career: Guy.
New action comedy Free Guy follows Reynolds' titular character as he learns that he is a non-player character in a popular video game.
There are a lot of parallels between Free Guy and The Truman Show, the excellent 1990s movie which followed Jim Carrey's Truman who realised his whole life was actually a TV show and everyone he's ever known was an actor.
Guy similarly learns that the comfortable, repetitive life he's always known is just the backdrop for other characters - those wearing sunglasses - to advance their own stories in his video game world.
This realisation comes in the form of a player called Millie (Jodie Comer, Killing Eve) who is searching the game for proof that the developer Antwan (the always hilarious Taika Waititi, Jojo Rabbit) stole the game she and her former partner Keys (Joe Keery, Stranger Things) created.
But the plot is not really what anyone is here for.
Viewers tune into Free Guy for the one-liners, pop culture references and over-the-top action.
And it sure does deliver.
Reynolds brings his trademark comedy to a wholesome, nice person for a change (Guy is very far from the likes of Deadpool and his other sarcastic roles) and it's genuinely delightful to watch.
The effects are bright and inviting, and seeing the world from an NPC's point of view was a great move from the writers.
There's also a tonne of enjoyable, talented supporting actors in Free Guy.
Waititi is an absolute scene-stealer, as he's proven time and time again in his own directorial efforts, while Comer continues to light up the screen as we've come to expect from the actress behind Villanelle.
Lil Rey Howery (Get Out) also gets to showcase his comic skills as Guy's best friend Buddy, and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect) is entertaining as Keys' colleague Mouser.
All in all, Free Guy is a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours and is just the uplifting, light comedy we could all do with after a heavy few months.
